CRA Online Access

Did you know that the Canada Revenue Agency allows for online access to your personal or business accounts?  There is a wealth of information available on their site which is quite easy to access.  Personal information includes tracking refunds, viewing past returns, checking benefit payments and setting up direct deposits.  Business accounts are even more useful for business owners or employees who need access to information.  The business fit allows you to see your account balance and payment history for all payment types, finding information on any installments paid and tracking years they have been applied to, file HST and other returns, and updating address information.  The CRA has detailed information on how to sign up for these services on their sites.

Sign up for individuals can be found at https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/e-services/e-services-individuals/account-individuals.html

Signup for corporate clients can be found at https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/e-services/represent-a-client/about-represent-a-client.html

For either registration you will need the following information:

  • your social insurance number;
  • your date of birth;
  • your current postal code or ZIP code and;
  • your current and/or last year’s income tax return as you will be asked to enter an amount you entered on a particular line on one of these returns.  (The line requested varies.)

Alternately you can link an existing online banking account to link to access your information. Most major institutions are supported and this can streamline the number of login clients you have.

In addition to inquiring about your affairs the CRA has a wealth of information on their website to learn about different taxes. The general site is currently located at https://www.canada.ca/en/services/taxes.html.  There you can find information on Income taxes, HST, payroll taxes, child benefits and excise taxes.  These services are available to the general public and can assist in filing returns and planning purposes.
